• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wuzzle Pizzard -- A DCI's Secret Agenda, a high-tension mystery, and an entertaining glimpse : DCI Austin, the Barrow Boy turned copper, has a secret agenda. Some of the constabulary at his Portsmouth nick are privy to some of his secrets and sustain and support Austin and his agenda. But they must await, along with us readers, until the final act with its explosive crescendo when the borrow boy reveals his darkest secrets and plays out his metaphorical cadenza while solving the mystery. The author populates his account with quirky characters speaking with idioms and accents unfamiliar but very entertaining to me, and most likely many other readers, whose only familiarity with the UK street comes from the sanitary public broadcast fare. He uses rhyming slang and unusual profanities to spice up the dialog, and for me, that made the read even more exciting and humorous. I did not take the time to research each unfamiliar personality or product he mentioned. Perhaps the only readers who would get those jokes would be Brits of a certain age. Finally, the author has given us another glimpse into the hilarious, and perhaps only fictional, English police station environment, which to us outsiders, bears resemblance to bad marriages and school playgrounds. Loved the wit, the fast pace, the "IN" jokes, once you are "in" to the story and the ​intrigue. This is the first book I've read by Pete Adams, and I understand this is part of a series, but you can pick this one up without any previous reading. It's a great novel, I definitely recommend it, and I'll definitely be looking out for more. It's so nice to laugh out load again. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Philippa Mckenna -- A Crime Novel With A Difference - Just Read It! : From tutu's and dead dogs, to a serious (hmmm) investigation into a brutal murder, this book really has got it all. Most of the time, DCI Jack (I prefer him as Jane) Austin, is armed with nothing more than his Morecambe and Wise shorts, or his best trousers, as he susses his way through a dark and dastardly plot to bring down FORCE. This is a crime novel with a difference. The author's writing style is just fabulous, and I can promise you will laugh and cry (but mostly laugh) your way through this book. There are also plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, as every fabulous crime / police procedural book should. This is actually the third book in a trilogy, but did I mind not having read the other two before this? Not a bit of it! Although the first two are now firmly placed on my TBR list. I know the kindle version is cheap (far too cheap in my opinion), if you can buy the paperback, then please do, as £1 from all sales go to supporting the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association. So, back to that dead dog. Why does it matter? And did Jack crack the crime? You'll just have to buy it, read it, and find out for yourself! ( Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2016 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elaine Hamilton -- Music to my fears. : At the beginning of Pete Adams’ novel, intense intimacy and deep affection both between the characters and between the author and characters is conveyed via the minutiae of domestic events, gestures, and thoughts: a coffee maker is dropped and broken; the central character - Jack ‘Jane’ Austin - scantily clad, tries to clear up the spilt coffee grains almost by optimism alone (combined with a little cursory reshuffling of them), for example. It’s a little bewildering to encounter these idiosyncratic fictional people so closely, so immediately, in scenes that are so private that one feels like an intruder at first. But, Jack’s life will soon be in jeopardy, and by the time it is, one realises that the love shown by the author for him, and for the characters he lives and works with is infectious. We are hooked. This is a comedy punctuated and underwritten by lament: lament for the loss of community values; lament for the rise of capitalism at the expense of heart; lament for the privatisation of the NHS; and Austin is its clay-footed, loose-bowelled, one-eyed, hero. A Barrow Boy's Cadenza is difficult to categorize but would, I suppose, fit into the comic crime sub-genre. This is not an easy nut to crack. Humour is difficult to get right - one person's meat is another's poison and so forth. So, this is a clever effort which is so likeable because its heart is firmly in the right place and all the main characters are written with warmth and affection.
